The living room is a social space that is designed to house interactions between you and your guests. When someone arrives at the front door, generally they are led to the living room, and in general, most of the interactions that will occur are going to take place in this space. As such, it’s important to try and create an atmosphere in this room, which is comfortable, inviting, and relaxing. You want visitors to feel at ease when they visit you and your home.

At the same time, it’s always nice to impress people. Since the living room is the first place that they’re going to see, you have an opportunity to really focus your creative efforts and try to make this the best looking room possible.

However, while you do want to stand out, it’s also important to take a balanced approach to this. You don’t want to use decorative items which are extreme, or which may be offensive to some people. You have to steer a steady course in between extreme and mundane, in order to impress as many people as possible, without creating an environment that is abrasive to anyone. In the end just try to make a judgment call about your own values, and the relative values of the people you care about, and who will be entering the space most often.

Accessories can make the difference between a bland living room and an intriguing space. Items like custom printed drink coasters, interesting statues, antiques, collectibles, and even intriguing posters can all go a long way towards giving a room some inherent personality. The living room is an intrinsically social space, where you instinctively invite guests to come and sit and chat, and interact with you. It is the stage of the social scene in your home, and as such should be decorated to be inviting, warm, friendly, and if possible, intriguing.

How can I re-purpose an ugly TV niche in my living room?

I have a large TV niche in my living room quite high on the wall. I do not have the money to cover it up or remodel, nor do I have a flat screen to hang in front of it. I have very little wall space in my living room, so I would love to find a purpose for this. It has a large TV sized hole on top, and two smaller, but still largeish holes on the bottom. There is a T shaped shelf separating the compartments.
I would love to find a way to make this an attractive feature that adds to the design of the room rather than so painfully distracting from it.

Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks!

Do my living room color ideas match?

My boyfriend and I are having trouble agreeing on living room colors. We are country, so we’re going with a rustic look. light hardwood floors with dark brown/black notches in it. He wants black and white pictures we found. We also have a multicolored tile going around the fireplace with the colors greyish/blue, brown, and tan in it. If we did beige walls, a chocolate brown couch, and black and bluish/grey accents like pillows and stuff, would the colors look ok together and help the pictures match?
Also, I was thinking of painting the kitchen which is connected to the living room bluish/grey to match the tile in the living room as well. The kitchen will have dark brown cabinets, which is why I chose the dark brown couch.
I love color, but he’s boring and likes the tans, so no bright color suggestions please. Just curious if my colors would go together or if there are any different wall colors or couch color we should choose?

In my living room the fireplace is the main focal point of the room, we also have a big screen tv and on that?

wall it seems pretty bare above it. Any recommendations on what kind of decor to put above it to not draw attention away from the fireplace and seem like to much clutter? Or just leave it bare as is?

We have already tried to mount the tv, and the cables would be exposed hanging down, it would look odd to me..

Is it okay to have dining room wall red and family room wall teal? Or do they need to be same color?

When you walk into my home there is one large room which is the formal dining room/living room combo. From there it leads you to the family room (large and open with 25 ft ceiling). I would like to paint an accent wall in red in the dining room/living room combo, so the overall decor will be red. In the family room, I would like to paint an accent wall teal and the overall decor will be teal and brown.

Just wonder what interior designers think about this. Should the common areas (dining room/family room/living room/kitchen) have the same overall design color?
